General Meeting sort by issue
In a city famous for its honking horns and yellow cabs, it is hard to imagine that horse drawn carriages were once the most common form of transportation in New York City. Two images of Fifth Avenue, taken only thirteen years apart, demonstrate the speed of the transformation: in 1900, the street was filled with carriages pulled by horses and in 1913, the horses had been replaced by automobiles. Innovation and change happen for a myriad of reasons, as Henry Ford can attest, but result in bankruptcy for those, like the horse industry, that are not prepared.
Underscoring its strong ties with academia, the IEC will sign collaboration pledges with Shenzhen Technology University, the DKE Next GEN programme and GOST-R Academy. The signing ceremony will take place during the IEC Academy and Capacity Building day on 24 October with the presence of Dr Shihong Tian, Administrator for Standardization Administration of China (SAC), Roland Bent, President of the National Committee of Germany (DKE), Alexey Abramov, Head of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart), and Frans Vreeswijk, General Secretary & CEO of the IEC.
The workshop provided participants with the opportunity to learn more about the IEC and its standardization and conformity assessment work. It included numerous breakout sessions and networking opportunities.
Council, the supreme governing body of the IEC, held its meeting on Friday 26 October 2018 during the IEC General Meeting in Busan, Republic of Korea.
This year, around 70 Young Professionals (YP) are in Busan to attend the three-day YP Workshop held alongside the IEC General Meeting. For the YPs, this Workshop serves as an opportunity to learn more about the IEC work in standardization and conformity assessment as well as to network with the 3 000 IEC experts attending the General Meeting.
The ninth IEC Young Professionals workshop will be held in Busan, Republic of Korea, on 22 to 24 October in conjunction with the IEC 2018 General Meeting. This workshop is an opportunity for the next generation of leaders to learn more about IEC and its work in standardization and conformity assessment.
Council, the supreme governing body of the IEC, held its meeting on Friday 14 October 2016 during the IEC General Meeting in Frankfurt, Germany.
IEC e-tech talked with James E. Matthews III, IEC Vice-President and Chair of the Standardization Management Board (SMB) during the General Meeting in Frankfurt, Germany. Matthews shared key decisions and their expected impact on IEC efficiency and effectiveness. Matthews will hand over to Ralph Sporer in January 2017. (see also his reflexions in this e-tech issue)
One aim of the Council Open Session, held on the Friday afternoon during the IEC General Meeting in Frankfurt, was to summarize and conclude the week-long activities and presentations in the Reinvention Laboratory.
The seventh IEC Young Professionals (YP) workshop was held in October 2016, during the IEC General Meeting in Frankfurt. There were 75 YPs present from 41 countries, with each participant nominated by his or her National Committee (NC). The IEC YP Programme has more than 400 participants from 49 countries, since it kicked off in 2010. National Committees have been great supporters of this Programme, which continues to evolve and grow.
IEC National Committees have selected the IEC 2016 Young Professionals who will represent them at this year’s workshop, to be held in Frankfurt, Germany, from 10-12 October 2016, in parallel with the IEC 2016 General Meeting.
The IEC General Secretary and CEO Frans Vreeswijk addressed Council at the 2014 IEC GM (General Meeting) in Tokyo, Japan, and presented highlights of the Commission’s work and accomplishments in the year since the Dehli GM.
